designer hype reel
How do you land a position in the creative team at Hopeful Monsters? You could bribe them with branded doughnuts, complete with an edible logo and yellow icing. Or why not whip up a hype reel?
Hopeful Monsters
A two-part brief, beginning with one of the most challenging questions a designer could be faced with, and to showcase that in whatever way you desire? I was stumped. But I REALLY wanted this role.
And in hindsight, I totally get it. We're a bit weird, every bit wonderful and all about solving problems in the most unexpected of ways. So this first task was really testing the waters to see how far this potential new team member would push the boundaries.
So thinking like a designer who had just spent the last few months rebuilding her personal brand, updating the portfolio and sweet talking creative directors into coffee, I decided to make a hype reel. A Holly x Hopeful Monsters Hype Reel.
90 seconds. 1 video. My narrative. With the goal to showcase as many hard skills as I could bring to the table, I also injected some personality and humour to make sure it didn't bore Carl to tears (hello soft skills!).
Creative direction, visual storytelling, animation, illustration, brand identity application, digital design, beat syncing and a voiceover all wrapped up in a Hopeful Monsters mission.
To top it off, I designed and built a custom password-protected landing page where the team could view and download my reel and resume, view my portfolio and get in touch.
[Spoiler Alert: Ya girl got the job. But it could have also been the branded doughnut bribe... I guess we'll never know].
